  • [01] Defence Minister: National interest above all

Defence Minister Photis Photiou stressed Sunday that our country is going through some very critical times and we must all put national interest above all, calling on everyone to stand by the President.

Speaking Sunday during a memorial service held at the coastal town of Paralimni, Photiou said that we would never abandon our basic positions in the efforts to solve the Cyprus problem, pointing out that the basis of the solution lies primarily with the UN Resolutions.

He went on to say that despite our good will and determination to terminate the division, the Turkish side remains intransigent.

[02] Spokesman: Government's views on negotiations clear

The Cyprus Government has made it clear that the views or proposals put forward as regard the opening of the fenced-off town of Famagusta, do not include any connection and do not make any reference to the illegal airport of Tympou in the occupied areas.

The Government Spokesman stressed that it is sad to engage into a public debate on the matter, adding that the Government's views as they were expressed by the President or the Foreign Minister to all their interlocutors or as they were conveyed to the Greek Premier in view of his contacts at the White House "are not related or do not refer to the illegal Tympou airport".

The Spokesman also added that the Foreign Minister documents that might be used on the negotiating table should not be the object of a public debate.

[03] EU and international community to turn to Ankara, says House President

House President Yiannakis Omirou called on the international community and the EU to turn to Ankara and exert pressure so to abandon its gunboat diplomacy.

Speaking Sunday, House President said that all those who are interested for the stability and security in the region, must call on Turkey to comply with the international law and its EU obligations, in order for its European course to continue.

Omirou also said that Cyprus must take advantage of the fact that it is an EU member state and to take initiatives, in coordination and cooperation with Greece, for the termination of the occupation and the division of our country.
