    President Nicos Anastasiades expressed Friday satisfaction with the level of the Cypriot army after a briefing he had from officers of the General Staff of the National Guard.

    President Anastasiades visited the headquarters of the General Staff National Guard accompanied by Minister of Defense Photis Photiou.

    He was received by the Chief of the National Guard Lieutenant General Stylianos Nasis President attended a meeting with members of the Parliamentary Committee on Defence.

    [02] Turkish Cypriots ask help from government of the Republic

    The Turkish Cypriot regime in Cyprus' northern Turkish occupied areas has, for the first time since the 1974 Turkish invasion, asked the Republic of Cyprus for help to address an environmental disaster, Foreign Ministry Acting Permanent Secretary Ambassador Tasos Tzionis told the House Environment Committee on Friday.

    He noted the immediate response of the UN regarding this issue and explained that the help related to containing an oil spill off the coast of Karpasia, on the northeast tip of the island.

    The Fisheries Department informed the Committee that there doesn't seem to be any danger for the oil spill to spread towards the coastal areas controlled by the Republic of Cyprus. Department officers are monitoring the government-controlled areas of Famagusta district, on the east and will be vigilant during the next ten days, it added.

    [03] Cyprus will fully implement Schengen code Regulation

    The Republic of Cyprus will fully implement the provisions of the Regulation concerning the Schengen Borders Code, which establishes common rules on standards and procedures for the control of entry of persons at the external borders of the member states of the EU and the implementation of which is obligatory for Cyprus.

    According to a press release by the Civil Registry and Migration Department, the Regulation introduces several amendments aiming to increase the clarity of the Schengen Borders Code and limit the possibility of different interpretations by the member states.

    The press release notes that an important amendment that should be especially noted is the one regarding the conditions of entry for third country nationals.
