[01] Cyprus urges all states to respect exercise of UNCLOS
UN Secretary General Ban Ki-moon, marking the 30th anniversary of the
launch of the United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea (UNCLOS)
called for a collective global effort to have all nations commit to the
treaty, which is often called the "constitution for the oceans."
At the same forum, Cyprus said all States should mutually respect the
lawful exercise of their neighbours' rights in the sea areas where each
State has sovereignty or sovereign rights and/or exercises jurisdiction
in accordance with the Convention.
Addressing the 193-nation UN General Assembly during the marking of
the Thirtieth Anniversary of the signing of the UNCLOS, Ban said he is
encouraged that support for the Convention has grown steadily through
the years," adding "like a constitution, it is a firm foundation -
a permanent document providing order, stability, predictability and
security - all based on the rule of law."
