  • [01] Syria, Egypt and relations with Russia on the agenda of today's EU FA Council

Relations with Russia, the US as well as the situation in Syria, Egypt and the Middle East will be among the issues to be discussed at the Foreign Affairs Council.

EU Foreign Ministers will also have an exchange of views with Ahmed Moaz Al-Khatib, President of the National Coalition for Syrian Revolutionary and Opposition Forces.

Cyprus will be represented by Minister of Foreign Affairs Erato Kozakou Markoullis.

[02] Nicosia hosts closing conference for European Year for Active Ageing

The Cyprus Presidency of the Council of the EU chose to place the citizens in the epicenter of its European policies and work for a more socially sensitive Europe, Cyprus President Demetris Christofias said today, addressing the Closing Conference for the European Year for Active Ageing and Solidarity between Generations 2012, in Nicosia.

The President said in his address - read by Presidential Commissioner Giorgos Iacovou - that he endorsed the goals of the European Year 2012, adding that it has provided a solid base for policy drafting, enhancing the political commitment and for raising awareness.

Europe's population continues to age and grow, the President said, adding that the policies undertaken during the Year did not only aim at maintaining fiscal stability, but at supporting employment as well.

Commissioner Laszlo Andro, responsible for Employment, Social Affairs and Inclusion said in his address to the conference, that actions taken during the Year were successful. The matters it addresses concern a lot of member states, the Commissioner went on, adding that this explains the engagement of member states at the highest political level.

[03] Cyprus will defend itself as long as Turkey`s occupation continues, Minister says

Cyprus shall strengthen its defences to protect its independence, sovereignty and territorial integrity as long as the Turkish occupation of the island's northern part continues and Anakra's expansionism threatens the survival of the people, Defence Minister Demetris Eliades said today.

Speaking during a ceremony to unveil a memorial monument, at the "Andreas Papandreou" air base, in Paphos, Eliades noted that "this is our duty to all those who lost their lives defending the country".

The Minister added that the Republic's obligations are yet to be fulfilled, as long as the Cyprus issue remains unresolved. As he put it "we are not entitled to forget, not even for a moment, that the occupation of the northern part of our island by Turkish troops continues, Anatolian settlers multiply, the misappropriation of our properties goes on, along with the destruction of our cultural and religious heritage".
