  • [01] President: Local administration plays important role

    The role of local administration in the difficult financial times is very important for maintaining social cohesion, President of the Republic Demetris Christofias said on Monday, addressing the annual General Meeting of the Union of Cyprus Municipalities.

    The President said this year`s meeting was taking place under unfavourable conditions, since the financial crisis had affected all European countries, including Cyprus, noting that austerity polities did not seem to be leading to recovery.

    He pointed out that the role of local administration was very important for maintaining social cohesion, noting however that local administration in Cyprus and abroad was being affected by the crisis.

    [02] House President in Lebanon on a two-day visit

    The President of the House of Representatives Yiannakis Omirou is on Lebanon on a two-day visit, where he will be received by the President of the Republic of Lebanon, General Micheal Sleiman, at the Presidential Palace.

    Omirou will also meet the Lebanese Minister of Foreign Affairs and Emigrants Adnan Mansour, and later on, at the Grand Serail, he will be received by the Lebanese Prime Minister Najib Mikati.

    This will be followed by a meeting with his Lebanese counterpart Nabih Berry, who will host a formal lunch in honor of his guest. The lunch will be attended by the Chairman of the Lebanese Foreign Affairs Committee Abdul Lattif el-Zein, the Lebanese-Cypriot Parliamentary Friendship Committee, the Minister of Foreign Affairs and Emigrants, Ambassador of the EU to Lebanon Angelina Eichhorst, Cypriot Ambassador to Lebanon Omiros Mavrommatis and the Director General of Emigrants Haytham Jomaa.

    [03] Human rights and role of EU institutions at Presidency Conference

    The Charter of Fundamental Rights of the EU, the need to reconcile family life and professional activities as well as the protection of human rights in times of crisis, are on the agenda of the Conference of the Chairpersons of Human Rights Committees which convenes in Nicosia in the framework of the Cyprus EU Presidency.

    In her opening address Minister of Labour Soteroulla Charalambous underlined the importance of the monitoring mechanisms for the supervision of human rights implementation but also the development of the right culture in the civil societies.

    Charalambous noted that although there has been a remarkable progress in the area of gender equality, there are still a lot to be done and measures to be taken.

    [04] Agreements for financing of EU Programmes on Wednesday

    Two Grant Agreements will be signed next week between the Republic of Cyprus and Iceland, Liechtenstein and Norway, concerning one cross-sectoral programme financed under the European Economic Area (EEA) Grant and one cross-sectoral programme financed under the Norway Grant.

    According to an official announcement, both Programmes will be operated by the Planning Bureau and consist of eight projects in total. Three projects fall under the cross-sectoral programme to be funded under the EEA Grant with an amount of €2.163.000 and five projects will be funded under the Norway Grant with an amount of €3.445.000.

    The Agreements will be signed by the Permanent Secretary of the Planning Bureau, George Georghiou, on behalf of the Republic of Cyprus, and by the Director General for Europe and Trade, Norwegian Ministry of Foreign Affairs Elisabeth Walaas on behalf of the Donor States.
