  • [01] Uniform implementation of acquis in workplace health and safety important

Efforts to achieve effective and uniform implementation of health and safety acquis communautaire in the workplace contribute significantly to the broader goal of EU social cohesion, Minister of Labour and Social Insurance Sotiroula Charalambous has said.

Charalambous was addressing an EU Senior Labour Inspectors´ Committee (SLIC) which takes place in Nicosia, on Thursday, in the context of the Cyprus EU Council Presidency at the 2nd half of 2012.

She further pointed out that constantly changing circumstances in the workplace to do with new technologies and materials makes adaptation, guidance, coordination and enforcement of the uniform legislative implementation difficult.

[02] EU Ministers to discuss trade agreements with third countries

Free trade agreements with third countries will be the focus of discussion of a Foreign Affairs Council that convenes in Brussels, on Thursday, with the participation of EU Trade Ministers.

The free trade agreements are expected to boost the EU's economy in the future, thus creating employment opportunities for its citizens. It is estimated that the total benefit from the ongoing potential agreements will increase by 1.4% the total EU GDP and create 1.6 to 4.6 million new jobs.

The Council, chaired by Cypriot Minister for Commerce, Industry and Tourism, Neoclis Sylikiotis, will be called on to approve a mandate for the negotiation of a free trade agreement with Japan. PROTH ARISTERA
