[01] Council calls for more to be done for literacy in Europe
Ways to better address the literacy problems in Europe were discussed
during the EU Education, Youth, Culture and Sport Council in Brussels
under the presidency of Cypriot Minister for Education and Culture
George Demosthenous.
The Council adopted conclusions on literacy which stress that it is
urgent to increase the effectiveness of measures taken within Member
States and at EU level to improve literacy among children and adults,
in particular those with socio-economically disadvantaged backgrounds.
The Council invites the member states and the Commission to report on
their actions to improve literacy levels at all ages and, where possible,
on the impact of those actions in the next Joint Report of the Council
and the Commission on the implementation of the strategic framework for
European cooperation in education and training in 2015.
