  • [01] Cyprus absorbs 100% of Cohesion Fund in 2011

    Cyprus was the most effective of the 16 beneficiary Member States of the EU, concerning to the absorption rate in 2011 of the Cohesion Fund projects, according to the annual report of the European Commission to the Council of the EU on Cohesion Fund, dated November 7, 2012 .

    As announced Friday by Cyprus' Planning Bureau, the country exploited fully (100%) the available community resources for 2011, amounting to 54.01 million euros, completing successfully two major projects, the Larnaca-Famagusta Unit for Integrated Management of Solid Household Waste in Koshi, and the upgrading of the junctions of Agios Athanasios and Germasogeia in Limassol. The second country, after Cyprus, with the greatest use of available EU funds in 2011 was Ireland with 94% or 539.67 million euros, followed by Estonia with 92.6% or 393.96 million euros, while in third place was the Czech Republic with 90.6% or 1.10 billion euros.

    [02] FM: Cyprus continues to show solidarity with people in need

    Everyone can and should contribute to the eradication of poverty and hunger, Foreign Minister Erato Kozakou Marcoullis said, noting that even though Cyprus faces serious challenges of its own it continues to show solidarity with other people in need.

    Addressing a seminar on "The World We Want - Global Civil Society Symposium: Food Security and Nutrition in the Post-2015 Framework" organized here November 22-23 by Cyprus Island Wide NGO Development Platform (CYINDEP) , Marcoullis noted that recently Cyprus has signed up to the new Food Aid Convention which reinforces the fight against hunger. In addition, Cyprus actively supports a post-MDG goal specifically on hunger eradication, backed with solid commitments on food security and better nutrition within the future development framework, she added. The symposium focused specifically on the food security - nutrition dimension of a potential future goal related to human development.

    It analyzed in detail six key issues related to food security, namely nutrition, sustainable agriculture, resilience, water, governance and the role of the private Sector, with a view to formulate a Goal and sub-Targets/ Measures to be proposed for the post-2015 development framework, set specific recommendations on 6 key sub-issues to Food Security and Nutrition to be included in the post-2015 framework, feeding into the Thematic Consultation on Hunger, Food Security and Nutrition and set specific recommendations to feed into the EU process as well as into national positions in the post-2015 negotiations.

    [03] Franco-Cypriot bilateral ties the focus of Education Minister's visit to France

    The enhancement of Franco - Cypriot bilateral relations in education will be discussed at a meeting Cypriot Minister of Education and Culture Giorgos Demosthenous will have with French Minister of National Education François Peillon, in Paris, on Wednesday.

    In statements to the press, Demosthenous said that after the completion of an EU Ministers of Education Council in Brussels, he has been invited by the French Parliament to address an event, in his capacity as the presiding minister of the EU Council of Ministers of Education. Demosthenous' address will focus on the role and significance of languages in dialogue in an event organised by the International Organisation of Francophony and the French Ministry of Foreign Affairs.

    "In the margins of this event I will meet with French Minister of Education and we will discuss matters of common interest and the further enhancement of bilateral relations in areas of education and culture", he said.
