[01] Presidency conference on integration of immigrants
Experts from EU member states, Norway and Switzerland gathered in Nicosia
on Tuesday to discuss the integration of immigrants, at a conference
hosted by the Cyprus Presidency of the Council of the EU.
The Conference focused on the role of local and regional authorities in
shaping and implementing the national integration policies. The speakers
said that the active presence of immigrants in participatory processes,
particularly in the local political and social institutions must
constitute an integral pillar of the integration policies implemented.
In her speech, read out by the Permanent Secretary of the Interior
Ministry Andreas Assiotis, the Minister of Interior Eleni Mavrou stressed
that effective integration policies are the key to maximizing the benefits
of migration and addressing the challenges posed by the diversity in
the European societies.
[02] Paphos Mayor and Chinese Ambassador discuss ways of cooperation
Mayor of the coastal city of Paphos Savvas Vergas and Ambassador of the
People's Republic of China to Cyprus Liu Xinsheng agreed in principle
on cooperation between China and the Municipality of Paphos to protect
Chinese investors interested in investing in Paphos.
Paphos Mayor told CNA that during a meeting with the Chinese Ambassador
held in Paphos Tuesday they discussed prospects and potentials for the
development of relations and cooperation between Paphos and Chinese
investors in different sectors. He also said that the Chinese show a
strong tourist interest for Paphos.
A Chinese delegation from the Henan district will be visiting Paphos
in 2013 to hold discussions on organising cultural events. The Chinese
Ambassador proposed that a delegation of Paphos Municipality pays a
visit to Beijing in 2013 to present the city's advantages.
