[01] Department of Labour Inspection announces the results of the EU
LIFE project
Department of Labour Inspection has announced the results of the European
Project LIFE funded by the European Commission which aims to assess
the quality of the air. According to an official announcement issued
on Tuesday, the description of air quality is based on the assessment
of chemical analysis' results of particulate matter (PM10) in special
filters. Particulate matter (PM10) are tinny solid or liquid substances
of less than ten micrometers in diameter existing in the atmosphere from
natural (desert dust, sea-spray, volcanoes) or anthropogenic (combustion,
traffic) sources. They can easily be inhaled by humans causing significant
health effects.
Such particles are suspected to be major contributors to respiratory
diseases, such as asthma and chronic obstructive pulmonary disease, but
also to cardio-vascular diseases in sensitive population groups. In
addition, according to the announcement , they have significant
environmental impact to global warming and clouds' formation, thus
influencing water cycle.
Therefore, the interest on PM has widely increased the last years. In
January 2011, the Department of Labour started the implementation of
a three-year LIFE project funded by the EU, which aims to assess the
PM10 contribution between natural and anthropogenic sources. For this
purpose, thousand filter samples of PM10 were collected from rural,
urban and traffic areas, all over Cyprus.
