  • [01] Minister of Commerce to visit London and Brussels

    Minister of Commerce Industry and Tourism Neoklis Sylikiotis, departs Sunday for London, where he will visit on Monday November 5 the tourism exhibition World Travel Market 2012.

    As stated in an official announcement, on the sidelines of the exhibition, Sylikiotis will hold a series of meetings with representatives of major tour operators and airlines of Britain.

    He will also hold a press conference to representatives of the Cypriot community of London and correspondents of Cypriot media, about the results of his visit and general developments in the tourism sector in Cyprus.

    [02] House President and Egyptian FM discuss financial crisis, Cyprus problem and hydrocarbon research

    The financial crisis, the Cyprus problem, hydrocarbon research within Cyprus` Exclusive Economic Zone (EEZ) and bilateral relations between Cyprus and Egypt were at the focus of a meeting Cyprus House President Yiannakis Omirou had on Friday with Foreign Minister of Egypt Mohamed Kamel Amr, who is paying an official visit to Cyprus.

    According to an official press release, during the meeting Omirou praised the excellent relations between Cyprus and Egypt, dating back to the 60's and thanked the head of the Egyptian diplomacy for the solidarity of his country with Cyprus.

    Omirou also referred to the signing and ratification of the Agreement for the delineation of the Exclusive Economic Zones between the two countries.

    [03] Tourism Minister and CTO discuss ways to increase tourist arrivals from China

    Commerce, Industry and Tourism Minister Neoklis Sylikiotis and a Cyprus Tourism Organization (CTO) delegation headed by CTO Chairman Alekos Orountiotis discussed Friday ways to increase tourist arrivals from China to Cyprus.

    In statements after the meeting, Sylikiotis said that ways to promote Cyprus as a tourist destination for tourism from Chine were under discussion with CTO officials as well as ways to facilitate travel arrangements for Chinese tourists. He pointed out that specific action should be taken towards that direction.

    Sylikiotis said that during 2011 there was an increase of tourist arrivals by 11% and a revenue increase by 13%.

    He added that during the period January - September 2012 tourist arrivals increased by 4.6% compared to the responding period in 2011, reaching almost 1.5 million for the whole year, while during the period May-September 2012 arrivals increased to approximately 1.7 million.

    [04] British Minister hopes countries in the Eastern Mediterranean will work together to develop oil and gas resources

    The discovery of oil and gas resources in Cyprus` Exclusive Economic Zone has the potential to bring greater prosperity and energy security to the region, British Minister for Europe David Lidington has said, and expressed hope that all countries in the region will work to overcome their differences to develop those resources in a mutually beneficial way.

    He was responding a question by Labour MP Jim Sheridan during a meeting at the British House of Commons concerning the political consequences in the middle east of the exploration for oil and gas off the coast of Cyprus.

    Responding to another question by the same MP, Lidington said that "we have repeatedly stated publicly our acceptance that the Republic of Cyprus has sovereign rights to exploit its mineral reserves within its exclusive economic zone."

    [05] Banking Union, MFF, and Cyprus' energy reserves in focus at ACCA Forum

    Cyprus Presidency believes that banking union is necessary for achieving a genuine European monetary Union and breaking the negative feedback loop between sovereigns states and banks, said Friday Minister of Finance Vassos Shiarly, speaking at the Forum "Regional solutions for a changing Europe - Celebrating the Cyprus Presidency of the EU Council", hosted by the Association of Chartered certified Accountants (ACCA) and the Institute of Certified Public Accountants of Cyprus (ICPAC).

    Shiarly said that single supervision is also a precondition for the introduction of potential direct recapitalisation of banks by the ESM.

    The Cyprus Presidency, the Cypriot Minister added, had given the proposal of a Single Supervisory Mechanism its immediate priority.
