a row [01] Deposits in financial institutions increase for a second month in a rowDeposits in Cypriot financial institutions increased for a second consecutive month in September, reaching €70.69 billion from €70.66 billion in August, according to figures released yesterday by the Central Bank of Cyprus. On an annual basis, deposits in September 2012 increased by 1.2% compared with 0.5% recorded in August 2012 and 4.1% in September 2011. The latest decline in deposits was registered in July 2011.Total loans granted by Cypriot monetary and financial institutions declined to €77.65 in September 2012 compared with €72.78 billion in August and €67.66 billion in September 2011. On an annual basis loans recorded a significant decrease of 7% whereas loans in August reclined by 9.4% year on year. Deposits by non- EU residents in the Cypriot financial system increased by 2% in September reaching €21.23 billion from €20.77 billion in September 2011 and 20.98€ in August 2012. [02] Nicosia hosts 1st Pan-European Drought Dialogue ForumThe 1st Pan-European Drought Dialogue Forum will take place on October 30-31, in Nicosia, under the auspices of the Cyprus Presidency of the Council of the EU.According to a press release, the aim of the Forum is to advance on drought research and associated science-policy interfacing and to reduce drought vulnerabilities and risks in Europe, by supporting the development or further improvement of drought management planning in the framework of the 2nd cycle of the Water Framework Directive River Basin Management Plans. The Forum will bring together representatives of the European Commission, international and European organisations as well as representatives of relevant European Research Projects.
