  • [01] Two Councils of Ministers convene under Cyprus EU Presidency

    Two Councils of Ministers take place on Thursday in Luxembourg under the Cyprus EU Presidency. EU Environment Ministers will gather in Luxembourg for the first Council on the Environment under the Cyprus EU Presidency, while EU Ministers responsible for the Justice and Home Affairs Council begin today their two-day meeting in Luxembourg.

    As regards the Environment Council, Ministers will discuss the Council Conclusions for the upcoming Conference of the Parties to the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change and the Kyoto Protocol, which will take place in Doha, from November 26 to December 7. The Council will be chaired by Minister of Agriculture, Natural Resources and the Environment, Sofocles Aletraris

    The Justice and Home Affairs Council will be chaired by Eleni Mavrou, Cyprus Minister for the Interior, and Loukas Louka, Cyprus Minister for Justice and Public Order. EU Home affairs ministers are expected to have an orientation debate on the proposal for a decision concerning a Union Civil Protection Mechanism.

    [02] Police calls for restraint ahead of Europa League match

    Around 420 policemen will be patrolling the GSP Stadium and various points in Nicosia, including checkpoints, with a view to prevent any trouble, in view of a much awaited Europa League game between Cypriot football team AEL and Turkish team Fenerbahçe.

    Nicosia Police Chief Kypros Michaelides said on Wednesday that the game is a high risk one, calling on everyone to act responsibly.

    [03] New rules adopted by EU Ministers simplifying access to EU funds

    The Council of Ministers adopted Thursday new rules aimed at equipping the EU budget with simpler financial rules while securing sound treatment of European taxpayers` money.

    This was adopted during the Justice and Home Affairs Council which takes place in Luxembourg under the Cyprus EU Presidency.

    In order to enter into force, the new rules have to be published in the Official Journal of the EU. They will become applicable on 1 January 2013, the same day as the rules of applications that the Commission should adopt in the coming days.
