  • [01] Cyprus joins efforts to prevent effect of pollutants on health

Minister of Health Androula Agrotou has said that Cyprus, along with 16 other EU member states, will draft a strategy for the prevention of the effects of mainly chemical pollutants on peoples` health, after comparing the results of a study carried out by the state laboratories of those countries.

Speaking after the opening of a conference on Human Biomonitoring in Larnaca, held in the framework of Cyprus` EU Presidency, Agrotou said the conference was expected to produce useful conclusions on the prevention of those effects.

Director of the State Laboratory Popi Kanari said Cyprus participated in the programmes Cophes and Democophes, through which 60 mothers up to 45 years of age with their children aged 6 to 11 years of age were studied.

    [02] Government approves investment proposals

A total of 465 investment proposals, expected to create around 1.400 new jobs, have been approved for the two calls for proposals over projects aimed to strengthen women and youth entrepreneurship, the Minister of Commerce, Industry and Tourism Neoklis Sylikiotis said Tuesday.

Sylikiotis announced an additional grant amounting to 5,5 million euro to fund all eligible applications.

According to the Minister, the decision will enable 180 young people to secure a grant of maximum 70 thousand euro for manufacturing activities and 50 thousand euro for other activities, to start their own business.

[03] Energy centre bid process nearing completion, government says

The decision on the successful bid for the construction of an energy centre in Vassilikos area, in Limassol District, will be probably taken on October 29, Permanent Secretary of Ministry of Commerce, Industry and Tourism Zeta Emilianidou has said.

Speaking before the Parliamentary Committee on Trade and Industry, Emilianidou, who chairs the evaluation committee on the matter, dismissed legislators' criticism of undue delay, noting that the committee has had to deal with "dozens of procedural matters".

"Not only is the process under way but it is nearing completion", she said.
