[01] Presidency hosts conference on youth employment
Unemployment among young people is one of the biggest problems generated
by the world economic and financial crisis, and the Cyprus Ministry of
Labour, recognizing this fact, is organizing a two-day conference on job
creation and youth employment, under the title "Developing sustainable
youth employment policies in an era of fiscal constraints".
Today 5.5 million young people across Europe are in search of a job
and even those who are employed face problems such as the fragile and
vulnerable nature of their positions, poverty, informal employment,
underemployment or low quality jobs, Minister of Labour Sotiroula
Charalambous said today presenting the conference to the press.
In the current socio-economic context, the Cyprus EU Presidency objective
for a "Better Europe" with emphasis on efficiency and growth, solidarity
and social cohesion, is "very compelling" given that the EU is still in
deep recession with a great impact on employment and social cohesion,
the Minister noted.
