  • [01] Austerity is not the answer to unemployment, says government

    Austerity is not the answer to unemployment, Director of the Office of the President Christos Christofides has said, in his address to an international conference of EU students on "The crisis is getting deeper. Is society under threat?"

    "We consider the issue of unemployment as a very serious issue which is a time bomb in the foundations of modern society", he told the meeting on Wednesday evening.

    Today's young generation, he noted, has the best university qualifications ever, especially when compared to previous generations.

    [02] Security measures in place for AEL - Fenerbahçe game

    Cyprus police authorities are preparing to police a game between Cypriot football team AEL and Turkish football team Fenerbahçe next Thursday, in Nicosia.

    In statements to the press in Limassol, today, Police Spokesman Andreas Angelides said two meetings took place on Wednesday on the measures to be taken before, during and after the match.

    A total of 1,140 Fenerbahçe fans are going to arrive to the GSP stadium from Cyprus' northern Turkish occupied areas by bus, before AEL fans arrive at the stadium, just outside the capital.

    [03] Two EC and UNDP projects in occupied Cyprus completed

    Ôhe European Commission and the United Nations Development Programme - Partnership for the Future (UNDP-PFF) announced the completion of two infrastructure and urban upgrading projects, benefiting the communities of Louroukina (Lurucina) / Akincilar, Nicosia and Kyrenia, in the northern Turkish occupied part of Cyprus.

    The projects are financed by the European Union under the Aid Programme for the Turkish Cypriot community and implemented by the UNDP Partnership for the Future, a press release issued here today said.

    Pedestrian crossings, improvement of sidewalks, clear road signs and speed limits, creation of regulated right turns and side parking and installation of three traffic signalisation system, two of which are for pedestrian use only, installation of twenty three traffic signs and road markings are some of the road safety measures funded by the EU and carried out by UNDP-PFF in 3 "black spots" locations in Nicosia and Kyrenia. The overall action costs 139,000 Euro.
