    President of the House of Representatives Yiannakis Omirou held a meeting on Wednesday with Austria's new ambassador to Cyprus, Dr. Karl Mueller.

    Welcoming the Ambassador, Omirou praised the high level of relations between the two countries and the parliaments of Cyprus and Austria.

    Omirou briefed Mueller on recent developments in the Cyprus problem and expressed disappointment for the deadlock in the UN-led direct talks between President of the Republic Demetris Christofias and Turkish Cypriot leader Dervis Eroglu, due to Turkish intransigence.

    [02] Round table discussion focuses on wellbeing of immigrant children

    The wellbeing of immigrant children and action that needs to be taken to alleviate related problems were the focus of a round table discussion at the House of Europe, in Nicosia.

    Addressing the event, Minister of Labour and Social Insurance Sotiroula Charalambous said the Cyprus EU Council Presidency, in the 2nd half of 2012, aims to fully integrate immigrants in their new environment to reduce in the greatest degree possible the phenomenon of social exclusion and child poverty.

    Commenting on an earlier comment of Eurochild Policy Officer Agata D' Addato on recent EU Council conclusions on children's wellbeing being "soft law", Charalambous admitted that this is the case.

    [03] Cyprus and Israel have reaffirmed their relations

    The excellent relations between Cyprus and Israel were underlined during a meeting of the Minister of Defence Demetris Eliades and Israel's Ambassador to Cyprus, Michael Harari.

    An official statement said that during the meeting, developments in the Cyprus problem, the Cyprus - Israel relations with emphasis on the issue of security and defence, developments in the Middle East and issues concerning the Cyprus presidency of the European Council were among the issues examined.
