[01] EESC seminar stresses need for coordinated efforts to protect
media freedom
The need for coordinated efforts with a view to protect media freedom
in the Euro-Mediterranean region and especially in the Arab Spring
countries was underlined during the opening of a seminar organized
here October 11-12 by the European Economic and Social Committee (EESC)
in cooperation with the European Commission and the Cyprus EU Presidency.
In her speech, EESC Vice President Anna Maria Darmanin said that the
initial enthusiasm that accompanied the Arab uprisings and the ensuing
freedom euphoria seems to be fading, noting that press freedom in a
number of countries in the region feels ever more distant. She added
that although many believed that media freedom would grow after the
ousting of former dictators in the region, in many places the tide is
reversing. She stressed that media freedom should be constitutionally
protected and that in many post-revolutionary countries there is no
legal media framework yet.
[02] Europe launches Friday two more Galileo satellites
Europe launches Friday Galileo`s third and fourth satellites, thus
offering more benefits to Europe and its citizens. A European Space
Agency official told CNA that Galileo will bring many benefits for
Europe's economy and for the daily life of its citizens.
He added that the launch of two more satellites is an important step
towards the completion of the Galileo Program, which will offer Europe the
necessary independence from other global navigation systems. According
