  • [01] Competitiveness Council continues deliberations on industry

    The EU Competitiveness Council which convenes today in Luxembourg, is expected to adopt conclusions on Key Enabling Technologies and the European Innovation Partnership on Raw Materials, both areas of enormous potential for economic growth and job creation in Europe.

    The Council, chaired by Cypriot Minister of Commerce, Industry and Tourism Neoclis Sylikiotis, will also exchange views on the European Industrial Policy, starting off the debate with three Communications by the European Commission regarding growth and economic recovery, the strategy for achieving the sustainable competitiveness of the construction sector and its enterprises, as well as the promotion of the cultural and creative sectors for growth and jobs in the EU.

    The aim of the discussions is to update the Industrial Policy Flagship Initiative of the Europe 2020 Strategy.

    [02] Defence Minister: Cyprus contributes to CSDP to support EU efforts

    The contribution of Cyprus` Ministry of Defence to the Common Security and Defence Policy (CSDP) aims at supporting EU efforts to strengthen world peace, security, stability and development, Minister of Defence Demetris Eliades said on Thursday, adding that "we share a vision for a better Europe and a better world, we also share the belief that a better Europe is necessary for a better world."

    Addressing the European Union Military Committee Away Day, taking place in Larnaca in the framework of Cyprus` EU Presidency, Eliades presented the aims of the Cypriot Presidency concerning the CSDP, noting that Cyprus is working with objectivity and in a spirit of consensus to serve the CSDP, in order to secure peace for the states and people of Europe.

    He said the problems in the defence sector from the financial crisis were being addressed with smart and flexible initiatives.

    [03] CB Governor and FinMin at IMF and World Bank meeting in Tokyo

    Minister of Finance Vassos Shiarly and Governor of the Central Bank Panicos Demetriades are participating in the annual meeting of the International Monetary Fund (IMF) and the World Bank, which is taking place in Tokyo, from October 9 to 14.

    Shiarly departed for Tokyo on October 10, after a Cabinet meeting, while Demetriades has been there since October 9, to attend the meeting of Commonwealth countries Central Bank Governors.

    During the IMF and World Bank meeting, Shiarly and Demetriades will have the opportunity to meet with officials from member states.
