That's what President of the Republic of Cyprus Demetris Christofias said, inter alia, on Monday in his speech at the ceremony for the "Limassol Declaration" on the EU's IMP, in the presence of the President of the European Commission José Manuel Barroso. He noted that IMP's philosophy has moved the Member States to the need for setting up national structures, so that the various individual policies related to the sea do not grow piecemeal, but within the context of a comprehensive approach, taking into account linkages and synergies with other sectoral policie

Kekic, who was addressing the first session of an "Economist" conference in Nicosia on Monday, noted that a 2% contraction for 2012 and a contraction by a few decimal points for 2013 are forecast for the Cyprus economy while it is expected to follow a recovery process between 2014 and 2017 in line with the euro zone.

However, he emphasized the risks present due to the island's economy great exposure to the Greek economy. As far as Greece is concerned he said that most probably it will not exit the euro as things stand at the moment.

[03] Limassol Declaration paves the way for Commission initiatives for Blue Growth

The Limassol Declaration adopted Monday in Cyprus paves the way for a set of Commission initiatives to explore and develop the growth potential in the areas of coastal and maritime tourism, ocean energy, blue biotechnology, marine mineral mining, as well as strategic guidelines on aquaculture. All initiatives will be undertaken in consultation with Member states and relevant stakeholders.

The Limassol Declaration proposes a marine and maritime agenda to back the Europe 2020 strategy. As highlighted in the Commission's recent Blue Growth initiative on opportunities for marine and maritime sustainable growth, the agenda focuses on promising maritime sectors where there is a great potential for new jobs and growth. These sectors are: marine renewable energy, aquaculture, blue biotechnology, coastal tourism and sea bed mining.

[04] Barroso calls for compromise between Government, parties and social partners

The European Commission President Jose Manual Barroso has called for compromise among the government, the political parties and the social partners in Cyprus with a view to reaching an agreement between Cyprus and the Troika of the European Commission, the European Central Bank and the International Monetary Fund over Cyprus' application for financial assistance.

Conveying a message of hope to the Cypriot people, Barroso said, "I know the situation is difficult, the challenges are immense, we need a huge effort from the political system in Cyprus, all the different parties from government and opposition from the social partners, but look it is critically important for the future of Cyprus."

He also expressed hope that "we can move rapidly to reach an agreement on the measures to be taken to guarantee a long-term sustainability of the Cypriot economy."
