at Brussels Marathon of education in times of crisis [01] EU Commissioners, Ambassadors, to run with the Cyprus Presidency at Brussels MarathonEU Commissioners, Ambassadors, Permanent Representations' officials, journalists and many friends of Cyprus will run at the Brussels Marathon wearing the official colors of the Cyprus EU Presidency to help a charity.So far, more than 260 people have registered, among whom are Vice-President of the Commission, Commissioner for Inter-Institutional Relations and Administration Maros Sefcovic, Cypriot Deputy Minister for European Affairs Andreas Mavroyiannis, Permanent Representative of Cyprus at the EU Ambassador Kornelios Korneliou, Cyprus Presidency Spokesman Nikos Christodoulides, Permanent Representatives of Estonia, Hungary and Holland, officials from 25 diplomatic missions in Brussels, and many more. The initiative has been welcomed by many diplomatic missions who express the wish it becomes an annual institution. [02] House President asks for US support for a just solutionThe Republic of Cyprus wishes for US support in order to find a just and democratic solution to the Cyprus problem and to face Turkey's threats over exercising its sovereign rights within its Exclusive Economic Zone (EEZ).In statements he made to the press after a meeting he had with US Ambassador John Koenig Omirou stressed that Turkish threats constitute a flagrant violation of international law and particularly of the International Convention on the Law of the Sea. Due to its important role in the international political arena, the US can play a leading role in a solution of the Cyprus issue. [03] Informal Education Ministers Council discusses illiteracy and role of education in times of crisisInvesting in education in times of crisis will have a positive impact and help build a better Europe, Cyprus Minister of Education and Culture Giorgos Demosthenous noted today, following the conclusion of the Informal Council of EU Ministers of Education, in Nicosia.European Commissioner for Education, Culture, Multilingualism and Youth, Androulla Vassiliou said from her part that education lies in the center of EU policies, aiming at boosting employment and growth. The two-day Informal Council, held on October 4 and 5 in the framework of the Cyprus Presidency of the Council of the EU, focused on the contribution of education in the economic development of member states and the welfare of European citizens, as well as on the problem of illiteracy.
