  • [01] Economy needs to recover to halt unemployment rise, says Labour Minister

The financial crisis in the past five years has developed into an economic and social crisis, upsetting the lives of millions of EU citizens, said Labour and Social Insurance Minister, Sotiroula Charalambous.

"If the Cypriot economy does not recover, allowing us to get out of the recession, the unemployment problem will continue to be the biggest social problem that Cyprus is facing as a result of the crisis," she said, adding that Cyprus is now in the process of drafting a bailout memorandum, due to problems its economy and its banking system are facing.

Charalambous further said that in mid October a new meeting of the National Employment Committee will be held, during which she hopes to present yet another package of measures which aims at young people.

[02] Cooperatives place people at the center of their activities, Minister says

Cyprus Minister of Commerce Neoklis Sylikiotis referred to the multifaceted role of Cooperative enterprises, noting that Cooperatives have always placed the people at the center of their activities.

Sylikiotis was speaking on Saturday, during the second and last day of the Cyprus Conference for the International Year of Cooperatives, organized at the International Conference Center, in Nicosia.

In his closing remarks, the Minister said that Cooperatives have proven wrong all those claiming that they comprise an outdated institution, with no place in today's competitive environment.

[03] Prastio-Mesorotsos Archaeological Expedition concluded Nicosia

The Ministry of Communications and Works, Department of Antiquities, announces the completion of the 2012 archaeological investigations at the site of Prastio-Mesorotsos in the Paphos district.

According to a Ministry of Communications and Works press release issued here on Saturday, from June 23 to July 28 a team led by CAARI Director and Fellow of the School of History, Classics and Archaeology at the University of Edinburgh conducted the fifth season of excavations at this multi-period site.

The site is extremely long-lived, with evidence of nearly continuous occupation from the Neolithic period to modern day.
