  • [01] President wraps up visit to Malta

    President of the Republic Demetris Christofias, who is on a two day working visit to Malta, will meet Friday with Prime Minister Lawrence Gonzi.

    According to an official statement, the President and the Maltese Prime Minister will give a joint press conference, following their private meeting and talks.

    Later on President Christofias is going to attend a working lunch hosted by the Maltese Prime Minister.

    The President's program includes a visit to the walled medieval city of Mdina where he will meet with the MayorPeter Sant Manduca.

    President Christofias and his delegation are returning to Cyprus Friday afternoon.

    [02] Russian Patriarch in Cyprus on official visit

    Patriarch Kirill Gundyaev of Moscow and all the Russians arrives in Cyprus today at the invitation of the primate of the Church of Cyprus Archbishop Chrysostomos. He will be accompanied by clerics and officials of the Church of Russia.

    A statement issued by the Archbishopric said that an official welcoming ceremony will take place at the Holy Archbishopric.

    On Sunday, the two religious leaders will officiate a service at Agia Sofia Church in Nicosia and on Monday a liturgy at Apostle Varnavas Church in Dasoupoli, to celebrate the founder and protector of the Church of Cyprus, Apostle Varnavas.

    Patriarch Kirill will meet President of the Republic Demetris Christofias on Monday before departing in the afternoon.

    [03] PSEKA conference concludes

    The International Coordinating Committee Justice for Cyprus (PSEKA) concludes today its annual conference, in the presence of Cyprus Government Spokesman Stephanos Stephanou.

    US Congressmen, speaking at the meeting, have denounced Turkey's policy on Cyprus, urging Ankara to accept a proposal on the return of Varosha – now under Turkish occupation – to UN administration.

    The conference honoured at a formal dinner Chairman of the Republican National Committee Reince Priebus, the American Jewish Committee, and Greek Cypriot businessmen living in the US Nicos Mougiaris and Dinos Iordanou.

    On Thursday more than 100 delegates from the US, Britain and Canada had the opportunity to meet with 30 Congressmen and nine Senators with whom they discussed the Cyprus problem and other national issues. However this year no meeting took place with a representative of the US Administration.

    [04] Communications Minister attends EU Council

    Minister of Communications and Works Efthymios Flourentzos has presented the agenda and the priorities of Cyprus' EU Presidency, to begin July 1st, at the EU Transport Council in Brussels.

    Flourentzos reiterated Cyprus' determination to promote sustainability and innovation in EU transport policy, noting that transport is the backbone of the European economy.

    The Cypriot Minister also stressed that Cyprus, during its EU Presidency, will cooperate with all the member states, the Commission and the European Parliament in order to reach a consensus on issues that relate to growth and development in the EU.

    Referring in particular to Cyprus' priorities, he noted the promotion of the role of digital technology in transport sustainability, adding that this will be on the agenda of the informal EU Transport Council to take place in Nicosia on 16-17 July.
