The government remains committed to achieving the necessary structural changes and fiscal targets set, to return to growth, the Ministry of Finance has said in a press release, commenting on European Commission's recommendations on the Cypriot economy and its special report on macroeconomic balances.

The European Commission, the press release states, welcomes Cyprus' commitment to achieving its medium term fiscal targets, noting at the same time the fragile macroeconomic environment which may act as a disruptive factor.

The government "is studying the European Commission's recommendations on the Cypriot economy and remains committed to achieving the necessary structural changes and fiscal targets set so that a return to growth is possible". The Ministry points out that achieving the greatest possible consensus with political parties and social partners is an important factor in this effort.

[04] First Trauma Registry of the Mediterranean in Cyprus

Traumas from accidents have become an epidemic of the century, since they constitute the main reason for limited life expectancy and are the main cause of death in children and young people, according to Cypriot Professor Demetrios Demetriades, Director of the Division of Acute Care Surgery at the LAC+USC Medical Center of the University of Southern California (Los Angeles County + University of Southern California).

In an interview with CNA to mark the recent official announcement about the creation of a Trauma Registry on the island, he said Cyprus is the first among the countries of the Mediterranean area which has created a Trauma Registry.

"Trauma is the medical epidemic of our century. It should not be regarded as an unpredictable event that cannot be tackled. It can be prevented and when it happens it can be addressed appropriately", he said.

He noted that in the past two decades traumas have been the number one cause of death in young people under 35 years, they are responsible for two thirds of deaths in children under 15 years and more responsible for the loss of potential life years than heart diseases and cancer combined.
