  • [01] Conference of Presidents of the EP to visit Cyprus

The Conference of Presidents of the European Parliament, consisting of the President of the Parliament Martin Schulz and the presidents of the political groups, will visit Cyprus on Thursday, in view of the Republic's upcoming Presidency of the Council of the European Union.

As part of the visit, Schultz will meet tomorrow Cypriot President Demetris Christofias at the Presidential Palace.

President Christofias and Schultz will meet members of the Cabinet and later on attend the Conference of Presidents which will last two hours, at "Filoxenia" conference center, in Nicosia.

Afterwards, President Christofias and Schultz will give a press conference.

President Christofias will then host a dinner for Schultz and members of the delegation at the Presidential Palace.

On Friday, the Conference of Presidents will meet the House President Giannakis Omirou, leaders of political parties and the Chairman of the House Standing Committee on Foreign and European Affairs, Averof Neophytou.

[02] Daul: We count on the success of the Cypriot Presidency

We count on the success of the Cypriot Presidency, which should have one main priority, reinforcing the political integration of Europe, Chairman of the EPP Joseph Daul has said.

Daul, currently on a visit to Cyprus in view of the Cyprus' EU Presidency to begin July 1st, will participate in the Conference of the Presidents of the Political Parties of the European Parliament to take place 31 May and 1 June in Nicosia and will hold contacts with the political leadership.

According to a press release by the EPP in Brussels, speaking ahead of talks with the Cypriot Government on the priorities of the upcoming rotating Presidency of the EU Council, Daul has outlined the crucial necessity of a more integrated Europe, politically, fiscally and socially.

``Cyprus is taking over its first EU Presidency at a crucial time for all of us, and only two weeks after key elections in Greece``, outlined the Chairman of the EPP Group.

[03] Cypriot parties advocate continuation of peace talks

The continuation of the present status quo is not in the best interest of either the Greek Cypriots or the Turkish Cypriots, political parties from both communities believe.

The parties, which meet regularly in the UN-controlled buffer zone, in Nicosia, have reiterated their commitment to a bizonal, bicommunal solution with political equality as defined in UN resolutions.

According to the Slovak Ambassador, Anna Turenikova at Thursday`s meeting the parties discussed the issue "The present stalemate at the negotiations and the way forward" as proposed by the hosted g/c party, Democratic Rally.

"To this end, they call on the parties to continue the negotiation process and in parallel to work towards the implementation of mutually agreed Confidence Building Measures to help the trust and cooperation between the two sides".
