He said that "during their meeting, they discussed with concern the situation in Syria and resulting tensions in the region".

"They also discussed prospects for the Cyprus Peace Process and the forthcoming conference on Somalia to be held in Istanbul", he added. Cyprus has been divided since the Turkish invasion in the summer of 1974. Turkey since then occupies 37% of Cyprus' territory, situated in the north.

Peace talks are underway to find a negotiated settlement that will reunite the country, under a federal roof.

[02] President participates in PES meeting

President Christofias was speaking at the preparatory meeting of the Party of European Socialists (PES) held in view of the informal European Council which is taking place on Wednesday night in Brussels.

The need to adopt policies at a European and national level in order to enhance growth and employment aiming to foster social cohesion was the focus of the meeting.

[03] Parliament`s workshop on the two World Wars

Addressing the event, Acting President of the Cyprus House Adamos Adamou said that the aim of the workshop is not just a historical recourse to the two World Wars, but the need to stress the importance for dialogue and understanding as a way of seeking peace and as a way of solving problems and disputes. In addition, he said the House of Representatives, by organizing this event, condemns any kind of atrocity and the use of force. Adamou said that Greece and Cyprus, like the rest of Europe, have paid a huge cost as a result of choices made by warlords and fascists.

President of the Cyprus Association of World War II Veterans Loizos Demetriou, addressing the event, referred to the Cypriot volunteers and their contribution to the two World Wars. He said that during World War I, around 16.000 Cypriots were recruited to the military service corps and the army medical department. A small number of volunteers were recruited for translation services. Demetriou said that in World War II, around 20.000 volunteers from Cyprus were recruited and fought on almost all war fronts, in France, North Africa, Middle East (Syria, Palestine, Lebanon), Greece and Italy. He stressed that almost eight hundred women, Greek Cypriots and Turkish Cypriots, offered their services for the war effort.

During the morning session of the workshop, Hagen Fleischer, Professor of the National and Kapodistrian University of Athens provided a speech titled "Wars' Causes". Michalis Michael Professor of Finance of the University of Cyprus, Maria Gavouneli Professor of International Law of the National and Kapodistrian University of Athens and Nasr Ibrahim Ishak, Representative of the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees in Cyprus, also addressed the audience.

[04] CIPA ranks 5th in World Bank report

According to a CIPA press release issued here on Wednesday, Director of the Bank Group's Investment Climate Department Pierre Guislain says that "in difficult times, governments may be tempted to cut funding for investment promotion". However, he adds, "this can cost them opportunities to secure investments and jobs".

"Skilled investment promotion agencies can give economies a competitive advantage by helping investors choose a suitable location and set up operations that create jobs and promote growth", Guislain notes.

A World Bank website press release highlights the fact that the report shows that limited resources need not be an obstacle to effectiveness. It is noted, "CIPA, one of the world's top-performing agencies, has only 10 staff members spread across a range of functions".
