[01] Minister: We look forward to the visions that unite Europe
Education and Culture Minister George Demosthenous in a message to
teachers and students to mark Europe Day said that Cyprus looks forward to
the full implementation of the visions which unite the peoples of Europe.
Demosthenous noted that "we are concerned about the challenges which
several citizens of EU countries face today and we seek the proposals
which will continue to lead the European Union to peace, progress,
welfare and the equal participation of all its citizens to the benefits
of technological progress and financial, social and cultural development."
The Minister noted that the promotion and the establishment of democracy,
the safeguarding of welfare and of a harmonic and balanced growth, social
protection and equality between men and women, the defence of the values
of tolerance, respect, mutual understanding, the protection of consumers
and sustainable development are among the fundamental common goals of
the member states of the EU, which the Republic of Cyprus joined in 2004.
Demosthenous said that the accession of Cyprus to the EU is an important
historic event, adding that Cyprus will preside for the first time the
Council of the EU, from July 1st to December 31st 2012.
