  • [01] Presidency of European Council aims for social cohesion

The Cyprus Presidency of the European Council will give special emphasis on development, solidarity and social cohesion, aims which become more imperative in view of the EU need to handle the repercussions of the economic crisis, said Labour and Social Insurance Minister Sotiroula Charalambous.

The aim of the presidency is to underline the significance of a balanced approach that will concentrate not only in the financial stability and public purging but also in supporting employment and social cohesion, she added.

Analyzing the social priorities of the Cypriot presidency at the Platform of European Social NGOs Conference on ‘How the Cyprus EU Presidency will respond to the social consequences of the EU crisis', Charalambous said the Cypriot presidency will concentrate on continuing employment, battling poverty in children and promoting the children's well being and for this reason it is scheduling a conference in October where children will also participate and will promote a discussion, the result of which will be published.

Charalambous also said the intention of the presidency is to promote the formulation of common principles for active aging and conclusions will be issued at the end of the meeting.

As far as equality issues are concerned, she said the Cypriot presidency will work to formulate indicators for violence against women, a continuation of the Beijing Platform for Action and will give special emphasis on services to support victims. At the same time, it will encourage discussions on the wage gap between the two sexes.

The Labour Minister underlined that the safest way out of the economic crisis is development and this is supported by new working positions. She said that emphasis will be given on finding ways to face unemployment amongst young people, adding that the Cypriot Presidency will call member states for a discussion that will include issues such as training opportunities, labour conditions, as well as matching qualifications with the expectations of young people with the needs of the economy and businesses.

She said the Initiative "An opportunity for Young people" will be part of the discussions and the aim is to include the results of all work done at the Council's conclusions. For this reason, a meeting is scheduled in Cyprus in October.

Charalambous said that for the EU to recover from the economic crisis, it must dynamically promote development and economic enlargement, paying attention to employment and social cohesion. The main aim of the Cypriot presidency is to promote discussion on the long term Financial Framework 2014-2020, adding that this framework should aim at solidarity, justice and improving the level and quality of EU citizens.

The Cypriot Presidency, she added, will aim to complete deliberations on this framework by the end of 2012.

According to Charalambous, the European Commission's proposal for the long term Financial Framework 2014-2020, the participation of the European Social fund will be strengthened with a minimum amount of 20%.

Concluding, the Labour Minister said the role of Non-governmental Organisations and civil society in general, is an indispensable part of the common efforts to create a better Europe.
