[01] Defence Minister attends informal EU meeting
Issues concerning the deployment of the EU's military capability have
been discussed during the informal meeting of EU Ministers of Defence,
in Brussels. Cyprus was represented by Defence Minister Demetris Eliades.
According to an official announcement, last Wednesday's meeting, chaired
by EU High Representative for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy
Catherine Ashton, focused on the initiative concerning the pooling and
sharing of resources, as well as on ways of developing the EU collective
security and defence.
The Minister, while in Brussels, met with Leon Bernardino, the EU
Special Representative for the Southern Mediterranean Region, as well
as Maciej Popowski, Deputy Secretary General of the European External
Action Service.
During the meeting with Bernardino, the two sides underlined the capacity
of the Cyprus EU Presidency to contribute to EU efforts to help people
in North Africa and the Middle East to establish democratic institutions
in their home countries.
