  • [01] Omirou: International community and EU must send a clear message to Turkey

The international community and the EU will have to send a clear message to Turkey that the implementation of its obligations, deriving from its capacity as an EU candidate member state, which it refuses to fulfill, as well as the respect of the principles and values of the EU, constitute necessary preconditions for its European prospect, House President Yiannakis Omirou said during a meeting he had with the new Ambassador of Sweden to Cyprus Clas Gierow.

An official press release issued here said that during the meeting, Omirou noted the stagnation of Cyprus talks, due to the long-standing Turkish intransigence, and condemned Turkish threats against Cyprus` exercise of its sovereign rights, deriving from the international law and more specifically the Law of the Sea, to conduct researches and use natural resources within its Exclusive Economic Zone.

Last December Cypriot President Demetris Christofias announced that exploratory drilling carried out by Houston-based Noble Energy in block 12 of the island`s exclusive economic zone revealed a gross mean average of 7 trillion cubic feet (TCF) of natural gas.

Omirou also informed the Ambassador about the scheduled meetings and conferences which will take place in Cyprus before, during and after the EU Cypriot Presidency - during the second half of 2012 - and which concern the Presidency as well as the involvement of the parliament to it.

[02] Energy Authority to ensure sufficient power supply

Cyprus' Energy Regulatory Authority (CERA) Chairman Yiorgos Siammas has assured consumers that there will be sufficient supply of power during the summer season, when Cyprus will assume the Presidency of the Council of the EU.

Speaking to CNA, Siammas said that CERA has prepared a strategic plan to ensure sufficient supply and additional security deposits of power.

He said that in view of Cyprus' EU Presidency the second half of 2012, the system will be updated with an additional 120 mw. At the same time he said that the Electricity Authority will complete the repair of unit 5 at Vasiliko power plant, which suffered major damage, following a blast at a naval base near the coastal city of Limassol last July.

The blast, which occurred in containers full of munitions confiscated from a vessel sailing from Iran to Syria in 2009, resulted in regular power cuts last summer.

[03] Labour Minister: Human Resource Development Authority valuable partner

Around 27,000 people took part from 2009 until the end of 2011 in the special project launched by the Human Resource Development Authority with a 40.6 million euro budget. Almost half of the participants, in particular 49, 3% of them, are employed.

The project was implemented for the third time in 2011, involving actions to prevent unemployment and improve employability, as well as actions concerning employment and training provision for unemployed, economically inactive persons and business employees.

During the year of 2011, 25.659,656 million euro were spent on projects concerning provision of training to a number of 60,133 participants in 7,398 training projects.

[04] Cyprus and Germany carry out aeronautical search and rescue exercise

Cyprus and Germany carried out Tuesday an aeronautical search and rescue exercise in the sea area south of Cyprus.

The exercise was coordinated by the Coordination Centre for Search and Rescue of the Republic of Cyprus.

In a statements today, Defence Minister Demetris Eliades said the exercise was crowned with success following that with the French Forces last month.

The exercise was carried out in the morning and lasted five hours. Cyprus participated in the exercise with three helicopters, patrol ships, medical staff and other services of the Republic, the Coordination Centre for Search and Rescue of the Republic of Cyprus, whereas Germany participated with three ships.
