In statements to CNA Markoullis confirmed that a meeting took place last week in Brussels in which she also participated where the issue of Turkey's refusal to invite Cyprus was discussed.

She said that the Republic of Cyprus has argued that such behaviour from an EU candidate country could create a precedent and that it is not only a Cyprus problem but also an EU problem.

"Response so far has been very positive, I would say, on behalf of quite a few Ministers of Foreign Affairs", Markoullis noted.

Apart from the fact that EU Foreign Affairs High Representative Catherine Ashton is not attending, she said, about nine or ten other Ministers of Foreign Affairs of EU member states have chosen not to attend the Meeting and to be represented instead by Permanent Secretaries or even by Ambassadors.

Markoullis further confirmed that efforts to persuade Turkey to invite the Republic are still ongoing, adding however that it does not seem likely that it will respond positively.
