[01] Christofias and Eroglu hold a new meeting todayThe leaders of the Greek Cypriot and the Turkish Cypriot communities, President of the Republic Demetris Christofias and Turkish Cypriot leader Dervis Eroglu, will hold a meeting today in the framework of the UN led direct talks aimed at a negotiated settlement of the Cyprus question.UN Secretary General's Special Advisor on Cyprus Alexander Downer is expected to prepare his report on the ongoing talks this week to submit it to the UN Secretary General who will decide on the next steps. Speaking after last week's meeting, President Christofias said that there are very significant differences between the Greek Cypriot and the Turkish Cypriot sides on the issue of property. He also said that the meeting "was the same as usual", adding that they continued their discussion on the issue of property, and that "the very significant differences and the distance between the positions of the sides were underlined." Meanwhile, UN Secretary General's Special Advisor for Cyprus Alexander Downer said after the conclusion of the last meeting that he will prepare his report to the UNSG this week and if his report is positive, the UNSG will call a multilateral conference on the Cyprus problem this spring. Downer said that if his report to the UNSG is negative, then the UN would decide on the next steps. "My job is to produce an objective report to the SG. In the middle of April I will be in New York I will be meeting with him and we will discus the report and he will consider the situation then", he added. According to Downer, the multilateral conference will be called by the UN SG "if my report is positive", adding that there need to be convergences on the core issues in particular in the areas of governance and power sharing and property. The latest round of UN-led peace talks began in September 2008 with a view to finding a political settlement that would reunite the country, divided since the 1974 Turkish invasion.
