  • [01] Cyprus must prove it is a responsible EU member

By assuming the Presidency of the Council of the EU during the second half of 2012, Cyprus must prove that it is equal to the rest of the member states of the EU and also a responsible member of the Union, by constructively contributing to the procedures aiming to deepen the European integration, President of the House of Representatives Giannakis Omirou said here Saturday.

Omirou was speaking during a workshop organized by the Office of International Relations of the Cyprus socialist party EDEK, on "The importance of the Cyprus EU Presidency – The contribution of the House of Representatives".

EU is experiencing a financial crisis and for this reason protection of the citizens in regards to social challenges is essential to avoid cultivation of anti-European attitudes and for the citizens to realize that efforts are made in view of finding effective solutions to the their financial and social problems, Omirou pointed out.

According to the Speaker of the House, during the Cyprus Presidency of the Council of the EU the Parliament will host eight Parliamentary Conferences with the participation of the Presidents and the members of the Parliamentary Committees on European Affairs, Foreign Affairs, Interior, Finance, Labour and Social Affairs, Agriculture and Environment, as well as on Human Rights. A joint parliamentary meeting with the European Parliament will also take place, according to Omirou.

Deputy Minister for EU Affairs, Andreas Mavroyiannis, underlined the importance of the cooperation between Cyprus and the current Danish Presidency of the Council, as well as with all the European institutions, especially the European Parliament, described by Mavroyiannis as a key-player in the promotion of legislative proposals.

Addressing the workshop MEP Kyriakos Mavronikolas said that in such a difficult period for the finances of Europe, during the Cyprus Presidency of the EU there will be tough negotiations and it is the Presidency's responsibility to propose compromising solutions.

[02] Cyprus` EU presidency will promote conference tourism

Organising more than 200 conferences in Cyprus during the Republic's Presidency of the EU Council in the second half of the year offers the opportunity to promote Cyprus as a destination for conference tourism, Cyprus Tourism Organization (CTO) acting director general Lefkos Fylaktides has told CNA.

In an interview with CNA on the role of CTO in Cyprus EU Presidency, Fylaktides said he was certain that the CTO will meet its obligations in accommodating and hosting delegates who will visit Cyprus during the presidency, noting that "we are not being complacent and we are working very closely with the Secretariat of the Cyprus Presidency to achieve the best possible outcome.``

He stressed that CTO acknowledges that a successful presidency is a matter of utmost importance for Cyprus, calling on all stakeholders who will be involved in accommodating and hosting delegates to give their best self for a successful outcome.
