[01] Defence Minister: Cyprus a hub for Search and RescueCyprus aims to become a hub for Search and Rescue operations in the Eastern Mediterranean, Defence Minister Demetris Eliades has told a seminar titled “Search and Rescue Operations.”This, he pointed out, would obstruct Turkey’s illegal objectives to challenge Nicosia’s FIR and the sovereign rights of the Republic of Cyprus. Addressing the seminar in the southern coastal town of Larnaka, Eliades said the Search and Rescue programme is funded by the European Union and is expected to be fully operational in 2013. “We believe this is very important in that the whole effort is part of efforts to establish Cyprus as a hub of Search and Rescue operations in the area of the Eastern Mediterranean Sea”, he stressed. The main aim of the seminar is to attract volunteers and private organizations to contribute to the National Plan on Search and Rescue. The Minister said that in the vital area of Cyprus’ Exclusive Economic Zone (EEZ) and Nicosia FIR “we not only have rights, but we also have responsibilities, which we should undertake with efficiency and reliability”.
