    President of the Republic of Cyprus Demetris Christofias has said that discussion on the chapter of properties began Tuesday in the context of UN - led direct talks aiming at reaching a solution of the political problem in Cyprus.

    In statements Tuesday after a meeting held between himself and Turkish Cypriot leader Dervis Eroglu at the Chief of Mission’s residence in the United Nations Protected Area of Nicosia, President Christofias said that discussion on the chapter of properties began today and will continue during the leaders` next meeting.

    Cyprus has been divided since 1974, when Turkey invaded and occupied its northern third. The latest round of UN-led talks has been underway since 2008 with an aim to reunify the island under a federal roof.

    [02] Minister-Commissioners to discuss EU Presidency agenda

    Minister of Communications and Works Efthymios Flourentzou will hold a series of contacts with European Commission members while in Brussels, as part of a delegation accompanying the President of the Republic Demetris Christofias.

    According to an official announcement, Flourentzou will meet European Commission Vice President Siim Kallas, responsible for transport, Vice President Neelie Kroes, responsible for the Digital Agenda and European Commissioner Maria Damanaki, responsible for maritime affairs.

    It is added that Flourentzou will discuss issues pertinent to his Ministry’s competencies in light of the forthcoming Cyprus Presidency of the European Council, due in the second semester of 2012.

    Moreover, the Minister and the European Commissioners will discuss with the promotion of various Presidency priorities in the area of transport, telecommunications and maritime policy.
