[01] Israel and Cyprus interested in peaceful MediterraneanIsrael and Cyprus have an interest in a secure, peaceful Eastern Mediterranean and will support all efforts to make sure that the region remains peaceful and stable, Israeli Foreign Press Advisor Mark Regev has said, referring to Turkish threats against Cyprus for exploiting its natural gas reserves.Speaking on the sidelines of official talks in Nicosia between President of the Republic of Cyprus Demetris Christofias and Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, Regev said it was ``an historic day`` and that this was ``the first ever visit by an Israeli Prime Minister to Cyprus.`` Regev said ``we are happy to be here`` and ``we are looking forward to good discussions with out Cypriot hosts.`` ``Ultimately Israel and Cyprus are neighbours. We are two democracies at the eastern edge of the Mediterranean and we are looking forward to cooperating and we hope this visit will serve to energise the bilateral relationship and that we can expand cooperation between Israel and Cyprus across the board in numerous fields. I think that will be to the benefit of both countries,`` he said. To questions about Turkish threats against Cyprus for exploiting its natural gas reserves, Regev said ``we signed, as you know, with Cyprus in 2010 the economic exclusive zone agreement and both countries presented that to the UN.`` ``I think both Israel and Cyprus have an interest in a secure, peaceful Eastern Mediterranean and I think we will support all efforts to make sure that this part of the Mediterranean, this region remains peaceful and stable. Ultimately, if we look at the region as a whole, in 2011 we saw a great deal of instability. We saw that in North Africa, we saw that in parts of the Arab world, and I think as democracies we have an interest in peace and stability and we will support that,`` he added.
