  • [01] Cyprus House President satisfied over Australia visit

    House of Representatives Speaker Yiannakis Omirou has expressed his complete satisfaction over the result of his visit week long visit to Australia.

    In statements at Larnaca International Airport on his arrival from Australia, Omirou, who led a six member inter-parliamentary delegation, said I would like to express the absolute satisfaction of the parliamentary delegation for the understanding we found from the Australian government and legislative bodies on the efforts for a solution to the Cyprus problem.

    He said it was a firm longstanding position which is based on the UN Security Council resolutions on Cyprus and the UN charter, adding that this support comes from the governments of Australia and the countrys political parties.

    The House Speaker thanked the members of the parliamentary delegation that accompanied him for the excellent level of cooperation during this important visit to promote the national interests of Cyprus at an extremely important country, such as Australia.

    The visit, held from 6-12 February, took place at the invitation of the President of the Senate and the Speaker of the House of Representatives of Australia.

    The delegation visited Melbourne, Canberra and Sydney and held a series of contacts with political personalities on a federal and state level.

    [02] Health Minister holds contacts in Tel Aviv

    Ways to upgrade health services between Cyprus and Israel were examined during meetings Health Minister Dr. Stavros Malas, held in Tel Aviv with Israeli officials.

    Dr. Malas met his Israeli counterpart Yakov Litzman and the Science and Technology Minister Daniel Hershkowitz.

    An official statement said that during his meeting with Litzman, they discussed the possibility of establishing cooperation using satellite services with specialized hospitals in Israel and private clinics in Cyprus.

    These kind of efforts aim to give additional value to the medical infrastructure of Cyprus, Malas added.

    During his meeting with Science and Technology Minister Daniel Hershkowitz, Dr. Malas analysed the Cypriot EU presidencys priorities in the field of research. Dr. Malas will chair the Competition Council during the EU presidency in the second half of 2012.

    [03] Cyprus secures place in Davis Cup`s Europe/Africa Group II

    Cyprus national team in tennis defeated Morocco with 3-2 for the Davis Cup that took place at Spyros Kyprianou Indoor Stadium, in Limassol between the 10th and 12th of February 2012.

    Cypriot Champion Marcos Baghdatis, 41st in world rankings, beat Morocco`s Idmbarek Yassine with 3-0 (6-4, 6-1, 6-0), securing Cyprus stay in Davis Cup`s Europe/Africa Group II. In the second round Cyprus will face Ukraine in Kiev on April 6-8.

    The meeting concluded with the game between the Cypriot Christos Hadjigeorgiou and the Moroccan Rachidi Younes. Younes beat Hadjigeorgiou with 2-0 set (6-2, 6-2).

    Speaking after the game between Baghdatis and Yassine, the captain of the Cypriot team Yiannos Hadjigeorgiou congratulated the members of the Cypriot team for their effort and their win.

    In addition he thanked the Cyprus Tennis Federation for the assistance that it provided to the national team
