[01] UN Cyprus envoy responds to criticism
The United Nations is focused on the substance of the Cyprus peace
talks, the organisations top envoy on Cyprus has said, adding that this
is an extraordinarily difficult issue. Speaking after a meeting with
President Demetris Christofias, Alexander Downer said it was very
constructive, adding that we are looking at how to move the process
forward from here.
Invited to comment on remarks by Greek Cypriot parties which consider
him as persona non grata, he noted that it was not appropriate to get
involved in politics or political debate. I can see that they are
particularly picking up on some comments at a press conference at
Greentree. I made it clear to anybody who is interested that obviously
the United Nations fully recognizes the Republic of Cyprus. The
Republic of Cyprus will hold the Presidency of the European Union for
the second six months of this year. There is no question of that.
Downer came under severe criticism for saying that the Greek Cypriots
instead of the Republic of Cyprus a fully fledged EU member since 2004
- will hold the presidency of the EU Council, in the second half of
2012.
