  • [01] House President on Greentree meeting

The President of the House of Representatives Yiannakis Omirou stressed that the Greek Cypriot side should not accept any deadlines or arbitration during the meeting with the UN SG Ban Ki-Moon at Greentree estate, New York. He specifically called on the President not to accept any attempt on behalf of the UN to set July 1st as a timeframe to reach a solution.

Speaking to the press, Omirou said that it is not in the UN SGs mandate to act as an arbitrator or to present the sides with bridging proposals. The President of the Republic must not accept any such attempt, thus direct or indirect arbitration or an attempt to set July 1st as an exhorting timeframe and any other attempt for an international conference without prior agreement on the internal aspects of the Cyprus problem, House President noted.

House President furthermore underlined that the National Council- the top advisory body for the President on the handling of the Cyprus problem- agreed last Monday on the framework the President is to pursue during the meeting at Greentree and this framework includes no deadlines, arbitration or an international conference, unless the two sides agree on the internal aspects of the Cyprus problem.

[02] State Department calls for progress at Greentree

The State Department calls on the two leaders in Cyprus, President of the Republic Demetris Christofias and Turkish Cypriot leader Dervis Eroglu to seize the opportunity and make progress during the Greentree meeting with the UN SG Ban-Ki Moon.

In a statement to the press, the Spokesperson of the State Department Victoria Nuland, underlines that Washington welcomes the talks that UN Secretary General Ban Ki-Moon will undertake with Greek Cypriot and Turkish Cypriot leaders in New York, January 23-24.

Nuland also noted that the United States strongly supports the negotiations under the auspices of the United Nations Secretary Generals Good Offices Mission.

We urge the leaders to seize this important opportunity to make real and substantial progress toward a settlement reunifying the island as a bi-zonal, bi-communal federation, she added.
