[01] Leaders to host dinner for UN team at talksThe leaders of the two communities in Cyprus, namely President of the Republic of Cyprus Demetris Christofias and Turkish Cypriot leader Dervis Eroglu, will be hosting a dinner on Thursday in the village of Pyla for the members of the UN team at the talks for a solution of the Cyprus problem.According to a press release, the dinner will be preceded by a meeting of the leaders in the village centre and a tour of the village`s coffee shops. The dinner will be attended by the spouses of the leaders, the members of the negotiating teams of the two sides, the UN Secretary General`s Special Representative in Cyprus and Special Adviser on the Cyprus issue, Lisa Buttenheim and Alexander Downer respectively, and the members of the UN team at the talks. On Wednesday the leaders had their first meeting of the year and later this month they are due to meet, in New York, with the UN Secretary General in a bid to make headway towards a negotiated settlement. [02] Unemployed increase by 23.8% in 2011The average number of the registered unemployed for the year 2011 reached 28,276 persons, compared to 22,842 persons in 2010, recording an increase of 23.8%, according to the Statistical Service.The unemployed persons, registered at the District Labour Offices on the last day of December 2011, reached 32,895 persons. Based on the seasonally adjusted data that shows the trend of unemployment, the number of registered unemployed for December 2011 increased to 31,432 persons in comparison to 30,991 in the previous month. Furthermore, in comparison with December 2010, an increase of 7,202 persons or 28.0% was recorded which was mainly observed in the sectors of trade, construction, accommodation and food service activities, manufacturing, public administration, as well as to newcomers in the labour market, where an increase of 437 unemployed persons was recorded.
