[01] House President: EU must call on Turkey to end occupation in
Cyprus
The international and the European community must realize that
tolerance of the Turkish behaviour raises Turkeys intransigence and
maintains destabilization in the sensitive region of the Eastern
Mediterranean, President of the House of Representatives Yiannakis
Omirou notes in a message, addressing the people of Cyprus, on the
occasion of the advent of the New Year.
In his message, he refers to the growing Turkish intransigence, leading
the direct negotiations to a dead end, as well as to the fact that
Turkey questions Cyprus` sovereign rights as they have been set forth
by the Law of the Sea.
Omirou says that the EU should call on Turkey to end the occupation in
Cyprus, a country member of the EU, and agree to a solution of the
Cyprus problem on the basis of the international and European law.
Turkeys refusal to do so should result in the termination of its
accession process to the EU, he adds.
The House President also refers to the global economic crisis, noting
that the people of Cyprus have been called to shoulder the burdens of
the financial crisis.
