Voting recommenced on 1300 local time Sunday for Cyprus` municipal
elections, after a one-hour recess. Chief Returning Officer Andreas
Assiotis said voter turnout is significantly lower compared with the
2006 local elections, particularly in Nicosia and the coastal town of
Limassol.
According to Assiotis by 1200 local time, turnout in Nicosia reached
26% compared with 34% in the 2006 local elections, 26% in Limassol
compared with 35%, 31% in Famagusta compared with 33% in 2006 and 39%
in Pafos compared with 44%. Larnaca was the only exception as voter
turnout reached 40% compared with 38% in the 2006 local elections.
Turnout for the May 2011 parliamentary elections was 36% for Nicosia,
46% for Limassol, 35% for Famagusta 39% for Larnaca and 40% for Pafos.
He also said that a pilot voter registration programme is implemented
in the Municipality of Engomi, which allows the simultaneous
registration of voter turnout as the voter casts his ballot. Those who
secure election as mayors are expected to be announced by 2200.
