  • [01] Direct talks on Cyprus issue continue on Monday

The leaders of the two communities in Cyprus, President of the Republic Demetris Christofias and Turkish Cypriot leader Dervis Eroglu, will be meeting on Monday in the UN buffer zone in Nicosia, in the context of UN-led talks to solve the Cyprus problem.

The previous meeting took place on December 5 and the two leaders focused on external relations and property.

Speaking after the meeting on December 5, the Special Representative of the UN Secretary General in Cyprus, Lisa Buttenheim said the leaders of the two communities continued the discussion on external relations and property.

President Christofias said, after the meeting, that differences between the two sides in the chapter of external relations are more than evident.

The UN will continue their shuttle diplomacy in order to have some results before the meeting at the end of January, between the UNSG and the leaders of the two communities, he added.

[02] Defence Minister: Cyprus to exercise sovereign rights

Defence Minister Demetris Eliades has expressed Cyprus determination to exercise its self-evident sovereign rights as regards its Exclusive Economic Zone, with respect and full compliance with international law and the Law of the Sea UN Convention.

Speaking during an event organized by the Federation of Cypriot Organizations in Greece and the Union of Cypriots in Greece on Energy Resources in the Mediterranean Safeguarding the sovereign Rights of Greece and Cyprus - Securing Peace - Impacts and prospects for the Cyprus problem, Eliades said that possible hydrocarbon reserves in Cyprus EEZ and reserves in Israels EEZ create a new energy scene for Nicosia, the Eastern Mediterranean and Europe.

Eliades stressed that through serious strategic planning and responsible political management Cyprus can change its history and become a venue of cooperation and development, promoting stability and normality in the region.

He referred to Turkeys threats against Cyprus, due to the beginning of drilling in Cyprus EEZ, reiterating that the Republic of Cyprus will not follow suit and will not contribute to the creation of a climate of tension and conflict in the region.

[03] Interior Minister advises wise exploitation of energy

The wise and sustainable exploitation of the energy resources of the Republic of Cyprus gives prospects of peace, prosperity and progress for the broader region, and hope for the generations to come for a safer future, Cypriot Minister of the Interior Neoclis Sylikiotis has said.

Speaking on Sunday at an event in Athens on the energy resources of the Mediterranean and the sovereign rights of Cyprus and Greece, Sylikiotis said that Cyprus is proceeding by exercising its sovereign rights, in line with international law.

He noted that the Government`s strategic aim was to turn Cyprus into a regional energy centre and is thus proceeding with the strategic planning, with research, mining and infrastructure for the exploitation of hydrocarbons.

Sylikiotis referred to Turkey`s threats and noted that the Government`s interventions towards the members of the international community and especially the UN Security Council and the EU resulted in protecting the sovereign rights of the Republic of Cyprus and annulling Turkey`s threats.

[04] Justice Minister to participate in EU Council

Minister of Justice and Social Order Loucas Louca will be departing for Brussels on Monday to participate in the EU Justice and Home Affairs Council, to take place on December 13 and 14.

The Council will discuss the fiscal framework for 2014-2020, the decision of the Council for the signing of an agreement between the EU and the USA for the use and transfer of data from passenger lists, and cross-border crime, as well as proposed regulations and directives.

Louca will be returning to Cyprus on Thursday.
