  • [01] Mexican senator hopes for Cyprus settlement

President of the Special Committee for European issues of the Mexican Senate Jose Guadarrama Marquez has expressed hope that a diplomatic solution will be achieved in the Cyprus problem and that conditions of continuous peace would prevail.

Marquez, who met in Mexico with Cypriot MPs Georgios Tasou and Christos Mesis, Chairman and member, respectively, of the Cyprus-Mexico Friendship Group and the Committee on Foreign Affairs, said communication with EU member states was very important for his country.

Referring to the Cyprus issue, Tasou assured that the Greek Cypriot side was working towards a solution, and referred to Turkey`s demands for the division of Cyprus, and its threats against the island due to explorations for natural gas in the exclusive economic zone of the Republic of Cyprus.

Tasou called on friendly countries, including Mexico, to exert their influence in order to curb Turkey`s intransigence.

He also assured that Cyprus was willing to contribute towards promoting relations between Mexico and the EU.

Mesis noted that armed conflict was never Cyprus` choice and thanked Mexico for its steadfast position of principle.

They also discussed bilateral relations, the global financial crisis and measures taken by Mexican authorities to combat the illegal trafficking of weapons and drugs.
