[01] PRESIDENT CHRISTOFIAS - HOMER DRILLING RIG
President of the Republic Demetris Christofias is on his way Monday to
the Noble Homer Ferrington drilling rig where exploratory drilling is
underway in the islands Exclusive Economic Zone (EEZ) to locate
possible hydrocarbons in the Republics Block 12 Aphrodite, south of
Cyprus.
The President arrived at Limassol Port just before 0930 local time and
departed via helicopter with his entourage at 1005.
President Christofias is accompanied by Commerce, Industry and Tourism
Minister Praxoula Antoniadou, Agriculture, Natural Resources and the
Environment Minister Sofoklis Aletraris, Government Spokesman Stephanos
Stephanou and Under Secretary to the President Titos Christofides.
Camera crews and a photographer are already at the Platform.
Houston-based Noble Energy, drilling rig began drilling in Cyprus EEZ
last September.
Cyprus has signed an agreement to delineate the EEZ with Egypt and
Israel with a view to exploit any possible natural gas and oil reserves
in its EEZ. A similar agreement was signed with Lebanon but the
Lebanese Parliament has not yet ratified it.
