[01] BUZEK - OMIROU - MEETING - BRUSSELSThe European Parliament is very supportive to the efforts for the reunification of Cyprus, President of the EU Parliament Jerzy Buzek said here today, who met earlier in the day with the President of the Cypriot House of Representatives Giannakis Omirou.The meeting focused on the latest developments in the Cyprus problem, Turkish intransigence in the ongoing UN-backed talks for the solution of the Cyprus problem, as well as Ankaras threats against Cyprus` exploratory drilling in the island`s Exclusive Economic Zone (EEZ). Buzek and Omirou also discussed the Cypriot EU Presidency in the second half of 2012. Speaking at a joint press conference with Omirou, Buzek referred to the Cyprus problem, saying the European Parliament is ``very supportive`` to the efforts aiming at the reunification of Cyprus, divided since the 1974 Turkish invasion. ``I have assured Mr Omirou that we see the future of Cyprus as a bi-zonal, bi-communal federation with political equality, as defined in the relevant UN Security Council resolutions, comprising a federal government with a single international personality for the benefit of the island`s citizens. We would like to have a mutually satisfactory solution which serves the interest of all,`` Buzek stressed. [02] FULE - CYPRUS PROBLEM - HYDROCARBONSEU Commissioner Stefan Fule conveyed to Turkish Minister for EU Affairs and Chief Negotiator Egemen Bagis, European Unions concerns about the recent tensions in relations between Turkey and Cyprus.EU Commissioner met Bagis on Wednesday in Brussels and according to a statement issued following the meeting, the Cyprus talks were also raised and both welcomed the encouraging progress the Secretary-General of the United Nations reported during the recent meeting in New York on October 30 -31. Cyprus has been divided since 1974 when Turkey invaded and occupied 37 per cent of its territory. UN-backed talks began in September 2008 with a view to reaching a mutually agreed settlement to the Cyprus problem. The leaders of the two communities in Cyprus, President of the Republic of Cyprus Demetris Christofias and Turkish Cypriot leader Dervis Eroglu held their fourth meeting with UNSG in Long Island, New York on October 30-31, 2011, in the framework of efforts to reach a solution of the Cyprus problem.
