Minister of Education and Culture Giorgos Demosthenous heading a
Cypriot delegation, participated in the Plenary of the 36th General
Assembly of UNESCO held in Paris October 25 to November 10, 2011.
According to an official press release, Demosthenous in a speech
referred extensively to the efforts made by the Cyprus Republic to
promote the goals of UNESCO since 1961.
He underlined that Cyprus EU Presidency in the second half of 2012 will
be a challenge to further promote cultural dialogue, social cohesion
and differences, which are important elements for building peace.
Referring to UNESCO`s Report of 2011, he said Cyprus is included in the
countries that have implemented most of the goals set in the Dakar
Action Plan. He noted that Cyprus today has three state universities
and four private universities which offer opportunities for studies and
research.
