[01] CIVEX - VAN DEN BRANDE - CYPRUS - TURKISH THREATSLuc Van den Brande, the President of the Committee of the Regions CIVEX Commission for citizenship, governance, institutional and external affairs, expressed his concern and his opposition over Turkeys threats to freeze its relations with the EU throughout the Cyprus EU Presidency, in the second term of 2012.According to an announcement by the Cyprus delegation to the Committee of the Regions, Van den Brande also said he saw no reason for the existence of Turkish troops on the island of Cyprus. Referring to the transfer of settlers from Anatolia to the Turkish-occupied part of Cyprus, the CIVEX President noted that this is a real and important problem, although, as he said, some insist to overlook it. [02] HOUSE PRESIDENT - GREECEThe international community and the EU should not just be passive observers of Turkish aggression against Cyprus but it should react, said Monday President of the House of Representatives Yiannakis Omirou.Omirou met today with leaders and representatives of Greek parliamentary parties during an official visit to Athens. He met Antonis Samaras the leader of the conservative party Nea Dimokratia, Giorgos Karatzaferis the leader of the right wing party LAOS, Secretary General of the communist party KKE Aleca Papariga and Parliamentary Spokesman of the left wing party SYRIZA Panayiotis Lafazanis. ``We are faced with developments, challenges, dangers but also opportunities, Omirou said in statements to the press after his meetings, adding that ``the challenges should be met successfully, the opportunities should be seized and the dangers should be avoided``. [03] COMMUNICATIONS MINISTER - AIR SAFETYCommunications and Works Minister Efthymios Flourentzos has assured that no decisions will be taken that might jeopardize air safety.The Minister was speakintg after a meeting with a delegation of the European Cockpit Association, in Cyprus to discuss the proposed regulations governing Flight Time Limitations (FTL). The delegation, headed by Captain Nico Voorbach President of ECA and ECA Secretary General Philip von Schoppenthau, discussed their concerns with the Minister, since Cyprus will hold the EU presidency when the EU Transport Ministers will assess the new rules, which they are expected to approve.
