Luc Van den Brande, the President of the Committee of the Regions CIVEX Commission for citizenship, governance, institutional and external affairs, expressed his concern and his opposition over Turkeys threats to freeze its relations with the EU throughout the Cyprus EU Presidency, in the second term of 2012.

According to an announcement by the Cyprus delegation to the Committee of the Regions, Van den Brande also said he saw no reason for the existence of Turkish troops on the island of Cyprus.

He met Antonis Samaras the leader of the conservative party Nea Dimokratia, Giorgos Karatzaferis the leader of the right wing party LAOS, Secretary General of the communist party KKE Aleca Papariga and Parliamentary Spokesman of the left wing party SYRIZA Panayiotis Lafazanis.

``We are faced with developments, challenges, dangers but also opportunities, Omirou said in statements to the press after his meetings, adding that ``the challenges should be met successfully, the opportunities should be seized and the dangers should be avoided``.
