  • [01] CHRISTOFIAS - EROGLU - MEETING

    President of the Republic Demetris Christofias and Turkish Cypriot leader Dervis Eroglu will hold a meeting on Friday, in the framework of the direct talks aiming at finding a solution to the Cyprus problem.

    According to a UN press release, the meeting will take place at 10.00 at the Chief of Missions residence in the United Nations Protected Area of Nicosia airport.

    This is the fifth of a series of all day meetings to take place over the next several weeks until October, as agreed during a meeting between the leaders of the two communities and the UN Secretary General in Geneva on July 7th, 2011.

    The previous meeting took place on Tuesday, August 23, and according to UN Secretary General`s Special Representative in Cyprus Liza Buttenheim leaders continued discussion on governance and power sharing. She also had said that the leaders will meet again on Friday in accordance to their agreed schedule, to discus the remaining chapters.

    She also announced that President Christofias and Dervis Eroglu have agreed to hold a make up meeting for the postponed meeting on August 5 and this meeting is to take place on 14th of September.

    The meeting, scheduled for August 5, was cancelled at the request of the Greek Cypriot negotiating team. The request was accepted by both the UN and the Turkish Cypriot team.

    Cyprus has been divided since 1974, when Turkish troops invaded and occupied its northern third.

    Peace talks are currently underway to find a negotiated settlement that will reunite the country under a federal roof.

    [02] OMIROU - US CONGRESSMAN - CYPRUS ISSUE

    House President Yiannakis Omirou discussed on Thursday with US Republican Congressman Michael Grimm the latest developments in the Cyprus problem.

    According to an official press release, Omirou expressed his appreciation for the positions of principle expressed by Grimm and his sensitivity on the issue of the destruction of the cultural heritage and Christian churches in the occupied areas of Cyprus.

    On his pat, Grimm condemned the looting of Christian monuments in the occupied areas of the Cyprus Republic and assured House President of his intention to contribute actively to further promote the relations of friendship and cooperation between USA and Cyprus, especially in the parliamentary field.

    They both highlighted the work has that been done by the Cyprus Federation of America and the wider Greek and Greek Cypriot community in the US towards this direction.

    [03] FOREIGN MINISTER - ISRAEL - VISIT

    The visit of Cypriot Minister of Foreign Affairs Erato Kozakou Markoullis to Israel was ``an expression of the progress and the strengthening of relations between the two nations, as can be seen from the important visit of the Cypriot President several months ago and the forthcoming visit of President Peres in Cyprus,`` according to the website of the Israeli Ministry of Foreign Affairs.

    The press release featured on the website noted that Israeli Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Foreign Affairs Avigdor Liberman met on Wednesday in Jerusalem with Markoullis and said he was ``glad to host her, especially as this is the second bilateral visit she has made, after visiting Greece, since becoming Minister of Foreign Affairs.``

    ``Liberman said that this is an expression of the progress and the strengthening of relations between the two nations, as can be seen from the important visit of the Cypriot President several months ago and the forthcoming visit of President Peres in Cyprus, as well as from the many meetings held between ministers of both countries over the last two and a half years,`` the press release notes.

    [04] AMERICAN GENERATORS - CYPRUS

    Two ships arrived in Limassol port on Thursday delivering generators of a total capacity of 35 MW, in the framework of an agreement signed between the Electricity Authority of Cyprus and US company Energy International Ltd.

    The new shipment completes the delivery of generators of a total capacity of 95 MW, as provided by the agreement.

    EAC Acting Spokesman Ioannis Tsouloftas Deputy said that ``the EAC proceeds quickly, steadily and efficiently to achieve its goal of increasing its production units in accordance with its initial planning and the mandate given by the state.``

    ``The arrival of the two ships in Limassol port today completes the delivery in Cyprus of all the equipment, as provided by the contract signed between the EAC and Energy International,`` Tsouloftas said, adding that the ships delivered a total of 84 containers with generators, transformers, fuel tanks and switches.
