  • [01] CYPRUS ISSUE - DIRECT TALKS - NEW MEETING

Cyprus President Demetris Christofias and Turkish Cypriot leader Dervis Eroglu will be meeting today, in the context of UN-led direct talks to solve the Cyprus problem.

This is the leaders` first meeting, following the Geneva meeting with UN Secretary General, on July 7.

Direct talks will be conducted at the residence of the UN Secretary General`s Special Representative in Cyprus Liza Buttenheim, in the UN-protected area of Nicosia airport.

Cyprus was divided when Turkey invaded in 1974. UN led negotiations have been ongoing since 2008 between the leaders of the two communities in Cyprus, in an effort to reunite the island under a federal roof.

President Christofias and Turkish Cypriot leader Eroglu met with UN SG Ban Ki-moon in Geneva, on July 7th, and according to Ban`s statement after the meeting, they agreed to enter into an intensive period of negotiations on the core issues of the Cyprus problem, with an aim of achieving convergences before meeting again in New York, next October.

    [02] GOVERNMENT - PARTIES - FISCAL CONSOLIDATION

The creation of a committee which will deal with the technical details of the fiscal consolidation of the Cyprus economy was decided on Monday, during a meeting between President of the Republic Demetris Christofias and political party leaders.

Minister of Finance Charilaos Stavrakis participated in the meeting. In statements after the meeting at the Presidential Palace, Government Spokesman Stephanos Stephanou said that on Friday a new meeting will take place between the government and the parties to decide the measures which need to be taken for the benefit of the economy.

Stephanou said during todays meeting there was wide consensus. He also noted that discussions focused on the measures that have to be taken in order to put the Cyprus economy on the right track, adding that all parties outlined their views and presented their proposals on the matter with an aim to form a widely accepted package of measures.

Last weeks tragic events, at the Naval Base Evaggelos Florakis and its financial repercussions were also discussed. A blast at the base killed 13 persons and destroyed the main power plant on the island.
